Whatever your reasons, you've decided to do it. Congratulations! Removing dairy, gluten and refined sugar from your diet can seem overwhelming at first but there are many products on the market and great recipes that will make your journey a lot easier.
Why do WE eat this way?
My husband is a physician who practices integrative medicine. This type of diet will not cure every ailment but many people do feel better once they’ve eliminated certain foods. My husband feels healthier without dairy and gluten and is more confident recommending it now that he's done it.
We recently removed dairy from our two-year old’s diet and her regular bouts of constipation disappeared. Overall, I’m trying to instill good eating habits in her and it’s working. She loves just about everything and is always open to trying new things.
I appreciate a good challenge and want to take care of my family. I love saucy foods, desserts, fried foods and pizza. The challenge is taking these comfort foods and making them taste good without all of the unhealthy ingredients.
My goal is to post a collection of favourite recipes that contain products available in Canada. I am not a chef. I generally don’t make up my own recipes; I adapt existing ones. But, I love to experiment in the kitchen and feel great knowing that my family members eat well and enjoy their food.
One last thing...
Eating healthy is a commitment. Do what you can.
Buying organic food is more expensive and it's not always available at your local grocery store. Corn and soy and anything on the dirty dozen list should be a priority, forget the rest if you have to. BPA-free cans are ideal too.
It also requires meal planning, preparation and lots of clean up. Life is about making choices. Some people like to shop for clothes and collect stuff; I prefer to have help in the kitchen for a few hours a week. Yes, I’m VERY lucky. When I don’t have help, it’s tougher but I still MAKE the time. I enjoy it and believe it's important. My
Update: My daughter is now five years old and a much pickier eater than she was early on. We still try to keep dairy and gluten to a minimum and for a number of reasons, we have added organic meats to her diet as well (I had to watch videos on how to make hamburgers! I haven't eaten one since 1982). Our family has grown. We now have a 20-month old boy who presents me with new food challenges to keep me on my toes.
In general, we have relaxed a bit on our dairy-free, vegetarian and gluten-free lifestyle to suit our needs but I am always committed to healthy cooking and delicious food.
